Catching zombies with a modified postgrey

Dealing with zombies is always a difficult job. Greylisting is an excellent way to fight them. However some people are concerned about the delay the greylisting mechanism introduces.

I've managed to modify postgrey to affect only zombie computers. If a regular smtp server connects to you, the modified postgrey lets it through without any delay. Only the zombie computers are greylisted, and given them their chances to prove that I've been wrong.

How to use spamdrop with claws-mail

First of all, make sure you have trained clapf, see Perform the initial training.

Add a new filtering rule: you need a filtering condition which runs spamdrop on incoming messages; and an action that has to be performed if the message was recognised as spam. Go to the Filtering Configuration dialog, and type the following in the condition entry field:

Performance tuning tips

clapf is able to perform well with its default configuration, however you may fine tune it to get even more.

	* Do not use excessive logging, unless you want to debug something.

verbosity=1

	* Virusscan only if the email has any attachments. I managed to gain 20% performance. The downside is that you lose clamav's ability to detect lots of phishing emails.

Sendmail and clapf

To use clapf as an SMTP content filter for sendmail you should configure two sendmail instances.

Sendmail instance “A” receives emails on port 25/tcp, and forwards them to smtpscanner which forwards to sendmail instance “B” on 192.168.1.121:10026/tcp.
